Currently the most commonly used window managers in the DSP laboratory is the Common Desktop Environment (CDE). It is a straightforward system to use, but can be customized if you wish. The foolowing links provide information about customizing the CDE environment:
The X Window System is an alternate window managing system that many of the older CSIP machines need to use. The most common X Window managers are the Motif Window Manager (mwm) and the Tab Window Manager (twm). In addition to mwm, HP workstations also support hpvue or vuesession window manager. The X-Window system requires a few initialization files to be present in your directory. The basic initialization files can be found on the ECE web page:
There is a wide variety of software used in the CSIP including commercial, public domain, and local packages. The following software is representative of the packages available on the network. These descriptions are brief but should help you get started with the particular package. Before beginning on a project, it might be wise to talk to other students and the staff about existing material which might save you time.
